Where is the outcry over brewery closure?
What worries me is the level of inaction that seems to have befallen the people of Cork. Where is the public outcry? Have we become so apathetic we will stand idly by and allow the incremental degradation of our city by corporate business interests?
I’m an expat. I live in a town in England which is virtually soulless. Almost every commercial outlet is a national or international franchise.
With the exception of a handful of pubs and coffee houses, there is nothing here that you wouldn't find in any other town in Britain (or the US).
I miss Cork. It’s a great city and some day I hope to return.
What makes it great is the heritage that brings the place to life and makes it different from everywhere else. Beamish & Crawford is an integral part of that. The brewery is more than 200 years old. It is a landmark of national significance, but more important, it is part of the furniture of a great city.
If someone suggested the English Market should be shut down to make way for apartments, would the people of Cork take it lying down?
Cork people should petition local publicans, politicians and the media, but they shouldn’t be fooled into thinking the loss of yet another Cork institution or historic building doesn’t matter.
