Zimbabwe’s nightmare - Mugabe must go

ROBERT MUGABE’S presidency has descended into insanity and chaos.

Thousands of the despot’s countrymen are dying, uncounted and invisible as a cholera epidemic sweeps the country like a biblical plague.

After years of spiralling inflation the country’s infrastructure has collapsed. Hospitals have closed, water supplies are fatally contaminated and corruption makes reform impossible. Even suggesting this has cost hundreds of Mugabe’s opponents their lives.

The EU joined American calls yesterday for Mugabe to step down after 28 years in charge. Military intervention from outside of Africa is impossible, so it falls to South Africa and the other powerful and stable states in the region to insist on the only possible course of action. Every day they delay costs hundreds of lives.
