There has been an explosion in the rate of sexually transmitted infections (STI) throughout Ireland in recent years, according to statistics compiled by the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland.

Since 1990 there has been a twentyfold increase in STI.

There were almost 10,000 STI cases throughout the country in 2006, and 1,500 of those were treated in the Cork and Kerry area. The clinics in those counties cover most of Munster, where the per capita rate of infection was the highest in the country.
