Astounding proposal on corporation tax

I WAS astounded to read the letter (November 26) from Michael Mernagh expressing his wish to see corporation tax here set at the level of other European countries.

Astounding proposal on corporation tax

Mr Mernagh lives in Carrigaline, Co Cork — a town adjacent to the hub of multinational enterprise at Ringiskiddy and Little Island. Multinationals based here are a vital source of employment to the local area and beyond. To increase corporation tax on these companies would be an error of astronomical proportions. The local area, and indeed the country, relies on these companies for work.

To go tinkering with a tax rate that attracted these companies to our shores in the first place would be catastrophic. And we certainly don’t need Brussels to tell our Government how to apply taxes fairly — a wish expressed by the majority of Irish voters in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
