Ruling class fail to understand public outrage

ONE of the more disturbing aspects of the recent revelations of profligate spending of taxpayers’ money by Fás is the inability of the ruling class to understand the reason for public outrage.

I listened with increasing incredulity to the breathtaking arrogance of Rody Molloy on Pat Kenny’s radio show last Monday week and the lofty disdain for the ordinary taxpayer exhibited by some panellists on Marian Finucane’s radio programme last Sunday.

The ‘reality gap’ between the small, privileged elite of politicians, bankers and those who enjoy their patronage at our expense is widening currently to Versailles-like proportions. Those who pay the piper are worried about their jobs and pensions, their children’s education and job prospects and the inability of the health service to care for them should they become ill.

A little humility from Health Minister Mary Harney and her courtiers would not go astray.
