Forget the hairdo, Harney wastes millions on hospitals’ makeover

WHAT totally bewilders me is the apparent inconsistency of the electorate.

Bertie Ahern spent about €20,000 a year on make-up but no one seemed too bothered. Now Mary Harney is supposed to have wasted a measly €400 or less on a hairdo and people want her to resign.

Apart from that, she has wasted hundreds of millions of euro on unused equipment, unused hospital wards and misdiagnosis or non-diagnosis of dozens of worried people by supposedly highly-trained staff and nobody seems to mind.

Is it because this piffling amount of €400 is more easily understood by the average voter? I remain puzzled also as to why a majority seemed to accept her as health minister while she was a member of the PDs but expect her to resign now that she isn’t.

Is she or is she not a good health minister? Or does being a minister have no sort of logic attached to it at all? It would explain why we keep electing incompetents or worse to squander our hard-earned billions.
