BILLY WALSH says "any decent democratic state should cherish all of its citizens regardless of age or health status" (Letters, November 4).

He then complains about the government “trying to remove medical cards from people who had worked hard all their lives”.

He and others seem to be blind to that fact that giving medical cards to all people over 70, but having thresholds for people under that age, is giving preferential treatment to older people.
