Faith without vows

I WAS delighted to see the profiles of some Opus Dei members in your issue of October 16.

Faith without vows

However, the caption on the picture of Helena Sheeran says “Helena... has taken Opus Dei vows…”

There is no such thing as Opus Dei vows. By their vocation, the faithful of the Opus Dei prelature commit not to change their state as ordinary lay faithful in the church and in the world. Taking religious vows would change that state.

Missing this key point leads to confusing Opus Dei with a religious order, thereby doing an injustice to both.
