Cometh the hour, cometh the columnist

THAT was great stuff by your columnist Fergus Finlay (October 14). This is the kind of inspiring journalism that newspaper readers are crying out for.

I hope Cowen, Lenihan & Co take time out to learn something about true political leadership after Mr Finlay cited the prime example of Franklin Delano Roosevelt ‘s inaugural address to a great country on its knees — battered by the Great Depression.

The quote about Sarsfield comes to mind: “Cometh the hour, cometh the man.”

Mr Finlay not only makes a comparison with how Roosevelt mobilised the ‘can do’ spirit of the American people, but how the silent majority are not dictating to the politicians on how better governed this country could be if we are indeed to learn the hard way that greed is not good.

After this, I rate Fergus Finlay up there with the best of Irish journalism.
