Garda presence - Not too much to ask

THIS week’s report on public attitudes to the Garda Síochána make challenging reading for the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner.

Seven out of 10 people believe the force needs to be improved but 81% are satisfied with the overall service provided to the community.

Unsurprisingly, a majority — 72% — called for more officers, more foot patrols, more contact with the community and longer station opening hours. In effect, a stronger, more visible and reassuring presence in our communities. That’s not too much to ask for.
