Drink sales fall - Sobering figures

THOUGH there are revenue implications — aren’t there always — the figures from the Revenue Commissioners that show a fall of 22% in drink sales last month compared with September 2007 will generate some surprise and a qualified welcome.

That qualification could be scotched if 22% of those with serious drink problems were able to regain control of their lives.

But, in reality, it is likely that the fall records nothing more dramatic than a considerable reduction in intake by those who would class themselves as social or moderate drinkers.
