Learning the hard way

THE introduction of student loans would be another backward step in the financing of university education in Ireland.

It would discourage most the students we surely want to encourage most, namely, bright children in deprived working class areas. It is difficult enough for such students to get to university in the first place without facing a disincentive of long-term debt.
