Bankers and punters

I KNOW I am not alone in being confused about the banking crisis. As someone with just about enough to pay the bills, I am never going to be a market player, but I get a feeling I am not yet in a position to drop into my local bank manager and tell him where to stick his deposit.

I gather that as a taxpayer, I am now in a position of exposure on a massive scale, thanks to a heady mixture of incompetence and greed on a global scale. Or put another way, I know enough to know that I don’t know enough. So what’s the difference between the hardened gambler in the bookies and the besuited investment banker? At least when the gambler takes a punt, he has to lay his money down.
