THE condemnation by Emmet Dunphy and Nick Folley (Letters, August 13) of the hypocrisy of our collective attitude to the Russian invasion of Georgia was well made.

Minister’s unacceptable comment on invasion

That same morning, however, we had an Irish junior minister, without challenge, assuring us on radio that the Russian invasion of Georgia was “a determined and resolute response” to what seemed to me to be Georgia’s exercise of sovereignty within its own country.

The Russian invasion being characterised in this way by an Irish minister should be unacceptable to people in this country who know a thing or two about being colonised and dominated by a powerful neighbour.
