Above our weight

THE proposal by Dick Keane (Letters, August 14) to “let all the people of Europe decide by direct vote” on the Lisbon Treaty is not in Ireland’s interest.

Above our weight

We are less than one per cent of the total population.

We would be swamped by the larger countries.

We have much more influence in the current arrangement in which each member country has a weighting.

Since the consequences of detachment from the EU, together with a Conservative-led Britain, are so dire, I think we have no option but to put the Lisbon Treaty to a vote again.

We will at least have time to reconsider the consequences of our actions.
