Dumping of food a scandal

I AM disgusted at the dumping of fresh food while the developing world starves and we enter a very uncertain economic phase here at home.

People on low and indeed middle incomes are now feeling the strain of ever-increasing prices for food and other commodities.

The price of basic food items in this country is crippling many families while we see on TV news the sickening practice of dumping fresh fish over the side — a daily practice now on all Irish fishing boats.

That this harebrained scheme hatched by Brussels bureaucrats has been tolerated by Irish governments over the years is unbelievable.

And the Government wonders why fishing communities voted no to the Lisbon Treaty.

If this is what Europe is all about, then as far as the Lisbon Treaty is concerned, well, they can throw that over the side, too.
