Drop the charter

I REFER to the suggestions by Richard Greene of Cóir (June 19) towards solving the Lisbon Treaty situation.

Drop the charter

Immigration Control Platform is a single issue organisation, and so Cóir’s suggestions in relation to immigration interest us. Like them, we wish to opt out of the charter of fundamental rights, as Britain and Poland have done. As we said during the campaign, it has potentially major implications for immigration control. We also wish to alert the public to the fact that article 8 of the protocol, which gives us an opt-out/opt-in on immigration and justice matters, also allows the Government to give up that protocol without consulting us again. This article should go in any changes. The other 26 member states would be indifferent on the matter.
