Religious and political elite snubbed petition
It is a pity though that during the gathering of a petition to include God in it, the following people refused to sign it: President Mary Mc Aleese, ex-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, all government ministers, including new Taoiseach Brian Cowen; Enda Kenny and all FG TDs; Labour leader Eamon Gilmore and all his party’s TDs; the Greens, Sinn Féin, Independents — in fact every single TD in the Dáil.
Likewise all Irish Catholic bishops and MEPs (with the exception of ex-MEP Dana who organised the petition).
It is worrying when the religious elite join forces with the political elite. Those 100,000 Irish people who did sign the petition to include God in the EU constitution were priests of parishes throughout the country, the ordinary people of Ireland and — without hesitation — Italy’s foreign minister.
Amazing, isn’t it? Only one political figure and the ordinary people of Ireland saw and supported the idea of including God in Europe’s constitution.
