Celebrating Father’s Day - Dad deserves a cuddle — or card — too

NEXT Sunday is Father’s Day and though it is little more than a marketing swizz dreamt up by some card manufacturer — and Mother’s Day too — they have been firmly established in the lexicon of things to be celebrated in our lives.

Therefore, it is surprising, and more than a little disappointing, that nearly half (49%) of Irish wives, sons or daughters are not planning to mark the day.

Half of the population don’t think “the da” is worth a little pat on the back, a quick cuddle or even a card bought at the last minute in a 24-hour filling station.

Whether this just means we couldn’t be bothered to get in the mood or are too miserable to buy a few golf balls in a little box is neither here nor there.

Though it is a victory of sorts for the card manufacturers’ marketing strategy that we are even talking about it, is it asking too much that we buy into the silliness rather than cold-shoulder the fathers of Ireland?

Imagine the furore — it would keep Joe Duffy at full steam for a week — if half of us said stuff Mother’s Day.

You can of course mark the day without buying anything, but do mark it. The da deserves it.
