The taxman cometh - Landlords get a call

FOR many years tax dodging was a national sport and though it would be naive to imagine that the practice is extinct it is considerably less prevalent than it was.

If the Revenue Commissioners’ pilot scheme in Donegal, where they visit rental properties, ask who the owner is and how much rent is paid, is successful in uncovering undeclared rental income it may be extended to the rest of the country. The Revenue Commissioners insisted their efforts are confined to investment properties and that all rental properties in the county will be visited sooner or later.

This initiative is welcome and will go some way to changing that the perception that there is one law for the rich and another for the rest of us.
