Protecting habitats - Why are we so neglectful?

THE Minister for the Environment John Gormley yesterday launched a report on our stewardship of threatened habitats and species.

It does not make for good reading and indicates, once again, our very poor attitude to the natural world we inherited and must pass on to our children.

Only 7% of the habitats examined are in “good status”, with 46% inadequate and 47% bad. These figures are an indictment of us all and suggest a wilful ignorance or a delusional attitude to the world around us.

The minister reminded us that the programme for government includes a commitment to strengthen Ireland’s implementation of the Habitats’ Directive.

Why is it we do not recognise our responsibilities?

Why do we always wait for the EU to crack the whip when it is so obvious that we have been neglectful?

As in so many areas the EU is proving to be an improving force in our lives. Another reason to vote yes on June 12.
