Mumps alert

WE are concerned over recent mumps outbreaks (Irish Examiner, May 2) which are attributed to inadequate take-up of the MMR vaccine.

We are particularly concerned as any resurgence of mumps could lead to an increase in the number of cases of mumps meningitis, which is often more severe than other viral forms of meningitis.

Prior to 1988, when MMR vaccine was introduced, the mumps virus was a leading cause of viral meningitis resulting in many hospital admissions a year, mainly in young children.
