Mumps alert
We are particularly concerned as any resurgence of mumps could lead to an increase in the number of cases of mumps meningitis, which is often more severe than other viral forms of meningitis.
Prior to 1988, when MMR vaccine was introduced, the mumps virus was a leading cause of viral meningitis resulting in many hospital admissions a year, mainly in young children.
The best way to protect children and students heading for university against this painful and potentially dangerous disease is by getting the MMR vaccine.
