Disgraceful schools - Promises that mean nothing

LIKE hundreds of communities around the country Glenville, in Cork, was promised a new national school a decade ago.

Like hundreds of communities around the country the people of Glenville must watch each and every day as the idea of education — the teachers, the parents, and most of all, our children — are demeaned every day they attend school in an appalling building not fit for purpose. The people of Glenville were given a personal pledge from the minister that building work would begin within two years.

Like hundreds of communities around the country the people of Glenville are still waiting for work to begin on the school promised a decade ago.

So, the next time you hear our increasingly bitter Taoiseach on a foreign television station describing the tribunal that had the cheek to ask him a few questions about his finances as “a load of nonsense, and it’s a recipe for more nonsense”, and say they were playing “fun and games” with him, in an effort to rewrite the facts surrounding the end of his political career history, think of his legacy.

The toilet converted into a classroom in Glenville national school, and the hundreds of other schools in similar straits across the country, would be a good place to start.
