Last of the breed

OUR late former president, Dr Patrick Hillery, represented the last generation of honest Fianna Fáil politicians and it is right he is mourned and his record of public service honoured.

We should compare and contrast Dr Hillery’s record of service with that of the current Taoiseach who, along with his mentor Mr Haughey, allowed the cronyism from which they both personally benefited financially to rot the heart of Fianna Fáil. Ironically, because of their innate honesty, Dr Hillery and others were unable to stop them.

Dr Hillery represented politics as it should be and Bertie Ahern represents politics as it has become.
