THE now seasonal green seas are almost upon us in the bays of west Cork.

Save our bays

The causes include coastal population pressures during summer and farmers releasing phosphate-rich effluent into shallow bays with ever warming seas. Perhaps this year our councils might try to eliminate this unsightly scourge by encouraging farmers not to fertilise near run-off channels, summer residents to limit washing machine activity and encourage the sale of phosphate-free detergents in coastal towns.
