Pressing need for ship safety inspections

THERE is an urgent need for a safety inspection officer to board all vessels in Irish waters to ensure basic ship maintenance levels are being observed.

The recent tragedies in which seaman have been killed or injured highlights the lack of adequate safety precautions on some vessels.

Moreover, there is a growing move towards Irish-owned ships being crewed by foreign nationals and it would appear that some health and safety regulations are being ignored.
