Rubbish-dumpers head for quiet rural roads

THREE TVs (all in a row), a toilet cistern, a cooker (with a deep-fat fryer nearly tucked into its oven), a golf umbrella, a child’s scooter, a large suitcase, a garden strimmer . . . no, these aren’t prizes in a game show, these are all items that have been dumped in a ditch close to my home on a quiet country road in east Cork.

A Scottish visitor to Cork recently was horrified (Letters, March 1) to see bags of domestic rubbish dumped on the side of the main Cork-Limerick road. It’s a good job he didn’t choose to travel the byroads or he would have been totally distracted.It seems some people are hellbent on reclaiming the title that took us so long to lose, “the dirty Irish”.
