Smaller ports need bigger investment

EVEN though we are an island nation, people working in harbours and ports have never had much political clout. And while the importance of ports is recognised now, there is still a lack of investment especially in the smaller ports, piers and harbours.

Smaller ports need bigger investment

Why do we not make more of our harbours by, for example, using ships to carry goods from Dublin to Cork? Such a measure would reduce traffic on roads and create employment.

More money needs to be spent on harbours and piers. The pier at Ballycotton in east Cork needs upgrading. Refurbishment began last year and proposals are with government for funding to complete harbour development in this important fishing village.
