For or against?

THE letter signed by groups opposed to the Lisbon Treaty (February 9) included members of the Communist Party of Ireland, Sinn Féin and the Workers Party, as well as Patricia McKenna.

They stated: “we are not anti-European — many of us have worked on European issues in the EU for decades.”

Is this claim serious?

SF has vigorously opposed every EU treaty since 1972. Now we are asked to believe that the Communist Party is pro-European.

I suspect that if this party had its way, Ireland would not even be a member of the EU.

EU membership is a key driver of our economic growth. A more effective and efficient EU, the goal of the Reform Treaty, is in our clear economic interest.
