Democratic deficit

SENATOR Deirdre de Búrca says “the Lisbon treaty will go some way towards advancing the democratisation of the EU.

It is worth supporting for that reason” (Letters, February 11).

Well, the EU hasn’t made a very good start on the democracy front when the heads of state — and not the people of the union — will decide who is to be its president.
