Ireland in control

THE article on immigration by Pat McArdle of Ulster Bank (January 7) is a bit off the mark.

I find it disappointing to think that a senior economist with one of the country’s leading banks should think EU policy is “outside our control”, at least so far as migration is concerned.

Ireland has been part of the EU since 1973 and has, if it so wishes, a say on every policy. And it will be the only country in the EU to have a referendum on the new Reform Treaty later this year. Enough of the fatalism!
