Independent Kosovo is a recipe for more conflict in the Balkans

I FOUND your headline ‘Serbia plots against Kosovo independence’ (December 27) somewhat odd when Serbia has been reacting since 1989 to the machinations of certain “plotting” western leaders bent on its destruction.

There is much reason for all nations to be concerned about the recent push by some western nations to grant Kosovo illegal independence.

Serbia has every right to defend its national interests, including its citizens and its borders.

For more than 60 years Albanian extremists have sought to create an ethnically and religiously “pure” pseudo state in Kosovo by ethnically cleansing, slaughtering, and persecuting non-Albanians, including Serbs, gypsies and many others.

With NATO’s aid, they have nearly succeeded in their Second World War fascist-era dream, demonstrating that illegal immigration (of Albanians over 60 years) and ethnic cleansing will be

rewarded by the “international community.”

Kosovo’s illegal independence will have a domino effect in encouraging secessionists worldwide and will further destabilise the Balkans, which is a complex interwoven patchwork of different ethnic groups with overlapping territorial claims.

Kosovo is a haven for terrorists, drug-runners and sex slave traders. It will be a permanent ward of NATO and a permanent source of terrorists for Osama bin Laden and others of his anti-western ilk.

The “international push” for Kosovo’s illegal independence is not supported by a majority of nations — just a majority of western nations — and it is aided and abetted by media-driven ignorance and western machinations so as to maintain a NATO presence there indefinitely.

People in western countries should strive to learn the truth of what is really going on in Kosovo and it will become immediately obvious that it is not ready for independence.

Serbia has undergone many changes in the past decade, including major democratic reform.

Illegally wrenching Kosovo from Serbia will seriously harm this democratic progress and will only exacerbate Balkan tensions by encouraging extremists and anti-democractic forces everywhere. Don’t allow Kosovo to be stolen from Serbia.
