The Government should find its voice and cry halt to ‘disgusting’ drink adverts

I WAS disgusted to see the new bus adverts sponsored by MEAS, an organisation backed by the drinks companies. Many people might be led to believe that drinkaware.ie ads are paid for by the Government.

In reality, they are not. Of course, if the drinks companies were serious about ending alcohol abuse they would not highlight the situations our nurses face due to alcohol abuse — they would go deeper and shine a light on the psychological damage alcohol abuse does to society at large.

If MEAS was serious about ending alcohol abuse, it would ban alcohol advertising.

Naturally, it won’t. The approach the drinks companies have to alcohol abuse is disgusting. They adopt sophisticated marketing techniques using colour, sex and peer pressure to market their goods.

It is time the Government stepped in and stopped being such a weak voice on the damage caused by alcohol abuse.
