First steps in battle against global warming

YOU suggested (Editorial, December 4) that some people would charge Finance Minister Brian Cowen with over-reacting if he introduced measures aimed at reducing our contribution to global warming.

You also suggested that any measures he did take will be no more than a starting point in this campaign.

Well, in the words of Chairman Mao, every journey begins with a single step. Motor emissions-based VRT, for example, demonstrates effectively to everyone that we are all involved in starting on this journey. As a first step we must courageously consider all the options for our future energy requirements, including careful analysis of the benefits of nuclear power.

Now tell us when will he and his cabinet colleagues get rid of the gas-guzzling Mercs and make the Toyota Prius the new State car?

They could also reduce the weight of their official vehicles — thereby saving more fuel — by taking the wheel themselves and sending their garda drivers out to chase the drug-dealers.
