Misdiagnoses a real scandal, says EU expert

ONE of Europe’s leading cancer physicians described the misdiagnosing of breast cancer in a number of Irish women as a scandal.

Professor Hakan Mellstedt from Sweden said well- educated mammographists were essential to a good health service.

They have contributed to Sweden’s success in diagnosing and treating breast cancer where survival rates five years after diagnosis are the highest in Europe at 90% compared with 76.2% in Ireland.
