FAIR play to Prof John Crown and cardiac surgeon Maurice Neligan for speaking out about the shortcomings of our health service.

It would be much easier and less stressful for them to lead a quite life and say nothing. Senior civil servants should support them and seek their advice as opposed to compiling dossiers on them in a J Edgar Hoover-like manner.

I think Prof Crown’s arguments have actually got more publicity as a result of the decision to drop him from last Friday’s Late Late Show panel
