Lonely liberal seeks new allies for the cause

PADRAIC KILLEEN (‘The Last Word’, October 23) offers yet another example of the Irish Examiner’s biased coverage of US politics.

Lonely liberal seeks new allies for the cause

I understand he is merely writing a lighthearted column on media matters, but I cannot leave his slanted opinions and misleading statements go unchallenged.

His column on ‘The craziness of the American political media’ describes Keith Olbermann and Bill Maher, respectively, as ‘a prissy do-gooder’ and ‘an honest rogue’, while portraying Bill O’Reilly as ‘a loud, irrational, finger-jabbing conservative’.

He neglects to mention that O’Reilly is host of by far the most popular nightly news show in the US — The O’Reilly Factor. Olbermann, a smear merchant with extreme leftwing views, has miniscule viewing ratings by comparison.

Mr Killeen goes on to describe Bill Maher’s new show as a massive hit on HBO, where he pulls no punches.

Maher, a nasty left-wing satirist, is on HBO, a premium cable channel where there is no need for more than microscopic TV ratings necessary to justify his existence.

Only the likes of Mr Killeen and other lonely liberals seeking company would even know where to find Maher’s show.

Mr Killeen also picks on Ann Coulter, an easy conservative target. She is no doubt mean-spirited and pushes extremely controversial views, but the quotes and actions attributed to her by Mr Killeen, while containing a grain of truth, are selective and taken out of context to further enhance his personal attack on her.

In this respect, Mr Killeen’s gossip column is on a par with the ‘journalism’ of Ann Coulter.

Unfortunately, most Irish readers of the Irish Examiner are simply not aware of these American media characters.

Mr Killeen is no doubt a radical liberal who is using his column to proselytise unsuspecting readers to his views.
