Civil partnerships

NOEL GORMAN (Letters, August 8) refers to the Taoiseach’s recent statement in support of civil partnership at the official opening of the Outhouse resource centre for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people in Dublin.

Mr Gorman claims that if this was Fianna Fáil policy, “it was not mentioned by them, or by the Taoiseach, in the course of the general election”.

If this was the case, then of course Mr Gorman might have legitimate cause for surprise.

However, the FF manifesto does in fact indicate support for civil partnership for same sex couples. Similarly, Mr Gorman’s claim that the proposal does not have popular support is based on his own uninformed prejudice rather than on any objective basis.
