Great bands echo down the years

Great to hear of the proposed Walk of Fame in recognition of the showbands (Irish Examiner, July 18).

Great bands echo down the years

The opportunity might be taken to recall and acknowledge the great dance bands brought into the much-loved Arcadia ballroom in Cork by the Prendergast family who were the proprietors.

Starting in July 1946 with Oscar Rabin and followed over the years by such names as Victor Sylvester, John Dankworth, Harry Gold, Squadronaires, Sid Phillips, Chris Barber, Humphrey Lyttleton, Geraldo, Acker Bilk and the all-girl Ivy Bensen Orchestra, etc.

Victor Sylvester last appeared at the Arcadia on June 10, 1970.

Great bands, musicians and music— and great memories.
