THE Lee swim took place in Cork city last Saturday. Newspaper photographs showed the swimmers in what looked like clean water. The opposite was the truth.

The state of the river was awful — parts of it were polluted with items such as toilet paper and sanitary towels, floating in clouds of grey water. In addition, two pipes were discharging sewage into the river upstream from the North Gate Bridge.

I thought the purpose of the new main drainage system was to eliminate all discharge of sewage into the Lee.
