Language policy fails

ACCORDING to a leaked report, the Irish language will no longer be the primary language of Gaeltacht regions within 20 years.

Language policy fails

I believe the language is safe in the Gaeltacht — although its use will have to be monitored.

However, I hope the report sends a message to the Government that their paltry, half-hearted approach to promoting the language is not working.

Instead of investing in marketing the language, they persist in trying to promote a cult-like Gael mentality that they believe somehow to be invincible.

I hope the Government and the extreme Irish language element they fund within the official language movement are happy with themselves in the wake of this report. I doubt they care, though.
