Give fishermen a role in the war on drugs
With the recent accidental drug seizure off west Cork, it is obvious that the country’s resources to fight this scourge are inadequate.
I would recommend that Ireland:
1. Staff its unmanned lighthouses with drug enforcement agents equipped with up-to-date electronic devices to monitor the coasts.
2. Hire the unemployed and under-employed fishing boats and fishermen as enforcement agents after they have received the required training.
3. Use UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) with real time video to monitor coastal areas. Airfields would not be necessary to launch these vehicles.
