Cruel sports: politics and foxhunting

FEW would disagree with your editorial on puppy farms (June 23) — “cruel, inhumane and unacceptable by every civilised standard”.

You rightly blamed “leading” politicians for their failure to act. Time was when politicians curried favour by providing animals on which cruelty was inflicted for entertainment.

The Roman dictator, Sulla, candidly admitted that the only reason he was able to get into politics was his friendship with an African king who could supply plenty of animals for the arenas.
