Drug-runners’ haven

HAVING sailed around the Mizen on many occasions I am well aware that the small bay between it and Three Castles Head is one of the nastiest and least-overlooked pieces of shoreline in the State.

Drug-runners’ haven

It is a small bay surrounded by high cliffs and indeed it was into this area that one CJ Haughey was wrecked many years ago.

Were it not for the fact the Mizen lighthouse keepers were there and maintaining a lookout he and his crew would not have been rescued.

Shortly afterwards, the manned lighthouse was discontinued. And the State lost the last remnant of a coastwatch service.

The result is the rampant, unobserved drug-running in places such as we heard of last week.
