Policy shift needed on waste elimination

I READ with considerable interest your recent coverage of the indiscriminate dumping of all kinds of rubbish throughout our green and pleasant countryside.

Policy shift needed on waste elimination

As we all know, the problem is getting worse every day and it could all be so different if only the Governments would implement a national strategy based on the principle of saving waste.

There should be charges at the point where waste is created rather than at the point of disposal, as is the case at present.

The change of policy I’m suggesting would not alone eliminate indiscriminate dumping, it would cause a big reduction in the amount of unnecessary waste being created.

It would also rid us of the all too prevalent notion in some Irish business circles that in order to be commercially viable, you have to be an enemy of the environment.

As a public representative who has advocated this concept for the past nine years, I can only hope now that it finds favour with our Green Environment Minister John Gormley.
