Docklands plan aims to transform city amenities

THE recently-published local area plan for the South Docklands is without question the most radical proposal for Cork city in living memory.

If implemented, the plan will see the area from the marina to the city quays transformed beyond all recognition and create several new focal points in the city.

While much of the media focus has been on the proposed tall buildings and business parks, the plan’s emphasis on quality of life issues also needs to be emphasised.

It is planned greatly to enhance many of the existing amenities in the area and there are proposals for a number of new amenities, including a major new park near the marina.

There are also proposals for cycle ways, pedestrian walkways, large open spaces and permanent art fixtures.

The plan places considerable emphasis on developing a first-class public transport system to link the area to the city centre.

This will allow much of the area to be pedestrian-friendly.

Proposals to provide greater riverside access to the public will enhance the amenity potential of the Lee.

The plan has now moved to the public consultation stage.

It is essential that as many businesses, voluntary organisations and individuals as possible participate in the process before it is adopted.
