Ireland no longer safe for visitors or natives

I WAS horrified to read of the cowardly attack on the English couple in their camper van in Co Louth recently.

I cannot imagine the terror and suffering inflicted on these innocent visitors to our shores by the thugs who attacked them.

Ireland is no longer safe either for its citizens or visitors. In every city, town and even village we have to be aware constantly of our surroundings and what is going on.

The Government doesn’t give a damn about public safety. Old age pensioners and others living alone are terrified, and now it would seem visitors are also fair game.

There are not nearly enough gardaí and they lack the basic equipment to defend themselves, never mind the public.

I hope the new Justice Minister, Brian Lenihan, will provide the resources to ensure we can walk the streets without fear again.

I pray that the couple who were so savagely attacked make a speedy recovery. At the moment I am ashamed to say I am Irish.
