The real reason why FG is surging ahead

I WAS surprised at how your coverage of recent opinion polls seemed to miss out on possibly the most glaring feature of the results.

The real reason why FG is surging ahead

There has been much speculation about the reasons for the surge to Fine Gael and the relative stagnation of Labour and the Green Party.

What, you might ask, is the sudden attraction? The obvious answer, which seems to have gone under the radar of most commentators, is that FG is the only party to have categorically ruled out coalition with Fianna Fáil.

Labour and the Greens have played coalition footsie with Bertie Ahern and neither has ruled out the possibility of keeping him in power after the election.

It is clear there is a large pool of ‘anyone but Fianna Fáil’ voters looking for a banner to flock to. Many of them seem to have rallied to Enda Kenny, but there is a message for Labour and the Green Party: it is not too late to change your mind. By ruling out coalition with Fianna Fáil, under any circumstances, they can also take advantage of the clear anti-Government mood out there.
