IRISH teams shared in two of Europe’s most prestigious awards for work in the field of science in Brussels yesterday.

Dr Sheila Donegan and Eoin Gill of Waterford Institute of Technology’s Centre for the Advancement of Learning of Maths, Science and Technology (CALMAST) won the Descartes Science Communication prize for “Eureka!”, a weekly magazine about science for children. The second prize was won by a team of 100 scientists including a number from Ireland that collaborated in building four massive telescopes in Namibia that have revolutionised astronomy.

The team shares €1 million prize money with two other projects.
