Unionists must accept end of apartheid

DR HAZLETT LYNCH’S letter headlined ‘Unionists should not accept Sinn Féin as a legitimate party made pitiful reading (Irish Examiner, January 15).

He still has not realised that the cosy apartheid arrangement which existed in the North for most of the last century is now almost a thing of the past.

Even he must accept there has to be an end to the gerrymandering and blatant sectarianism which were such revolting features of the fascist unionist reign in that part of the country since partition.

Of course it will be difficult for unionists to accept that power-sharing is just around the corner because they have had it so good for so long.

For more than half a century they made all the decisions while at the same time depending on millions in subsidies from London which were used for the most part to prop up the only apartheid system in the northern hemisphere.
